Chronology

  • 1755 raised as the 56th Regiment of Foot
  • 1756 became the 54th Regiment of Foot
  • 1782 became the 28th (West Norfolk) Regiment of Foot
  • 1881 amalgamated with the 39th Regiment of Foot to form The Dorsetshire Regiment

First World War

The 2nd Battalion, Dorset Regiment fought in Mesopotamia, and were captured at the fall of Kut. See Prisoners of the Turks (First World War) for general information about their fate.

A vessel charted by the East India Company, for the conveyance of troops to Calcutta on the news of the Indian Mutiny reaching England, which sailed from Portsmouth on 15 August 1857.
