The Eastern Punjab Railway (EPR) was formed in 1947 from that part of the North Western Railway(NWR) which remained within the borders of the new Indian state.
In 1947, one part of the NWR became the nucleus of Pakistan's railways, with 4976 of the old system's 6861 miles lying within the new state; the part lying in India of 1885 miles(3033km) was reorganised and renamed as Eastern Punjab Railway.
Like the Assam Railway, formed at the same time, the new administration was not considered an economical, efficient or self-sufficient system.
In 1952, the EPR was merged into the Northern Railway, one of the new zones of Indian Railways.
