This was an event during the East Indies Campaign

Summary

De Suffren intended to land troops at Porto Novo to recapture lost Dutch and French holdings on the coast. Hughes got between the French escort and the troop convoys during the night. In the ensuing naval battle the English fleet suffered severe damage and withdrew to Trincomalee for repairs. French troops were landed and joined with those of Mysore.
