When Barnett died, Peyton took command and headed for [[Trincomalee]] to repair the Medway. On 25 June he came across the French squadron under La Bourdonnais off Negapatam and there was a sea battle in which three British ships were severely damaged. Peyton retired to Trincomalee for repairs. On 27 July he met La Bourdonnais again in Negapatam Roads but stood clear as he believed them to have been reinforced and he wanted to protect the convoy expected from Britain. The French were free to sail for [[Madras]] which they captured.

Synopsis

Peyton was captain of the HMS Medway, a 60 gun ship of the line, in the squadron sent to the East Indies under Commodore Curtis Barnett. When Barnett died, Peyton took command and headed for Trincomalee to repair the Medway. On 25 June he came across the French squadron under La Bourdonnais off Negapatam and there was a sea battle in which three British ships were severely damaged.
