In a series of manoeuvres to confuse the French under Comte de Lally, Eyre Coote sent Major Brereton to attack the fort at Trivatore while he proceeded to Arcot. Brereton then advanced to Wandiwash where he successfully assaulted the pettah on 27 November. Coote arrived the next day and batteries were constructed to bombard the fort. On 29 Novemebr the walls were breached and the garrison called upon to surrender. Although Coote promised the Indian Killadar that he could retain his command, he was taken to Madras and imprisoned.
