Summary
Rivalry between British and French trading interests on the Coromandel coast were generally peaceful until the outbreak of the War of Austrian Succession. The British captured some French ships, the French captured Madras and the British besieged Pondicherry. The Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle ended the war in Europe and Madras was returned to the British. From then on the British and French were strong political powers in India.
