- 1798 raised as 17th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry following 1796 reorganisation when previous 17th became 2nd Btn 12th Regt
- 1824 1st Battalion became 34th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Major E F Waters
- 1857 mutinied at Barrackpore on 29 March
