Summary
Following the seizure of Patna the British forces retreated from the city and were pursued by Markar and Somroo, Mir Kasim's generals. They were surrounded at Manjee where they surrendered in the face of overwhelming odds. Captain Carstairs was criticised for his lack of leadership. Captains Turner, Tabby and Wilson, commanders of the Native Battalions were killed. Captain Carstairs was severely wounded and died shortly afterwards. The English civilians, officers and soldiers were taken into captivity. The three native battalions were destroyed - the Sepoys either joined the Nawab's forces or were disarmed and sent home.
