Chronology

  • 1803 raised as the 44th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry
  • 1861 disbanded

In 1861, after the Indian Mutiny, the name was taken by the 11th Sylhet Local (Light) Infantry which later became the 44th Gurkha Rifles.
