Summary
A naval squadron under Admiral Comte d'Aché was sent to reinforce the French settlements in India. Admiral George Pocock's squadron in the Hooghly River was augmented by the arrival of Commodore Charles Stevens. Pocock sailed on 14 April to intercept the French. Admiral d'Aché manged to cut off the Bridgewater and Triton in Fort St David roads and they were run ashore and burnt to avoid capture. On 29 April the fleets engaged. The result was inconclusive. Though the French losses were greater, they were able to land reinforcements at Pondicerry.
