  • 1800 formed as 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry
  • 1824 became 14th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry
  • 1885 became 14th Regiment of Bombay Infantry
  • 1901 became 14th Bombay Infantry
  • 1903 became 114th Mahrattas
  • 1922 became 10th Battalion 5th Mahratta Light Infantry
  • 1947 allocated to India on Partition

First World War

114th Mahrattas served in Mesopotamia, 1914-1918, including at the Battle of Sharqat, where many awards were granted, and also in Persia.

The regimental history Chronology of the 114th Mahrattas by A.R. Solly (Times of India Press 1926) provides details.[1] This book was previously available in the now closed Ministry of Defence Library in Whitehall,[2] so is now possibly available in the Ministry of Defence’s Prince Consort's Library‎ Aldershot, Hampshire, England.

(There was a second volume published, by C.L. Proudfoot in 1980, covering the period 1947-1979, available at the British Library, UIN: BLL01011832039 ). The DLI file appears to be a reprint edition which advises first published 1960, but this date is not correct for this book.
