  • 1809 raised at Farrukhabad and Mainpuri by William Linnaeus Gardner as Gardner’s Horse
  • 1823 became 2nd (Gardner's) Local Horse
  • 1840 became 2nd Irregular Cavalry
  • 1861 became 2nd Regiment of Bengal Cavalry
  • 1890 became 2nd Regiment of Bengal Lancers
  • 1903 became 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse)
  • 1921 absorbed the 4th Lancers
  • 1935 became the 2nd Royal Lancers (Gardner's Horse)
  • 1947 allocated to India on Partition
