Chronology

1st Raising

  • 1761 raised at Chichester as the 98th Regiment of Foot
  • 1763 disbanded

2nd Raising

  • 1780 raised as the 98th Regiment of Foot
  • 1785 disbanded

3rd Raising

  • 1804 raised as the 98th Regiment of Foot
  • 1816 became 97th Regiment of Foot
  • 1818 disbanded

4th Raising

  • 1824 raised as the 98th Regiment of Foot
  • 1876 renamed 98th (Prince of Wales) Regiment of Foot
  • 1881 amalgamated with the 64th Regiment of Foot to become the 2nd Battalion, Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire) Regiment
  • 1920 renamed The North Staffordshire (The Prince of Wales's) Regiment
  • 1959 amalgamated to form The Staffordshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's)
  • 2007 amalgamated with the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment and The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment to form The Mercian Regiment, in which the Staffords became the 3rd (Staffordshire) Battalion
