Bhopal State Railway

Indian State line, funded by Begum, Nawab of the Princely Bhopal State to connect Bhopal to the Great Indian Peninsula Railway(GIPR) line at Itarsi.

Opened 1884 and initially worked by Indian Midland Railway(IMR); linked to the ‘British Section’ to form the Bhopal-Itarsi Railway in 1885 and worked by IMR.

Amalgamated into the Great Indian Peninsula Railway(GIPR) in 1900.

An on-line search of the IOR records relating to this railway [1] gives 9 references, all relating to Bhopal State Railway and Indiand Midland Railway. The most important being:-

  • L/F/8/14/988 “The Indian Midland Railway Company Limited, Contract for the maintenance and working of Bhopal State Railway; 1894 supplemental to the contract of 1885.”
