Coimbatore was annexed to the Madras Presidency in 1799 after the defeat of Tipu Sultan in the 3rd Mysore War. It was the capital of Coimbatore District during the British period.

The major railway junction of Podanur, with a railays workshop, was situated four miles to the southeast.
