By the treaty of 1801 the Nizam of Hyderabad was obliged to maintain a military force called the '''Nizam's Contingent'''. The subsequent treaty of 1853 renamed the force the '''Hyderabad Contingent'''. During the 19th century the names of the units changed from '''lst 1st and 2nd Regiment Nizam’s Cavalry''' to '''Ist 1st and 2nd Cavalry Hyderabad Contingent''' and '''lst 1st and 2nd Lancers Hyderabad Contingent'''.
