The Bengal (Province)|Province of Bengal at the end of the 19th century was a huge administrative area. It was hoped that dividing it between the mainly Hindu west (comprising West Bengal with Bihar and Orissa) and the mainly Muslim east would be a political and administrative improvement. Partition was confirmed in October 1905.
