High Court

High Courts were established in India by the Indian High Courts Act of 1861 to replace the Sadr Adalats in each major city for the appeal of justice.

The first courts were in the Presidency capitals and opened from 1862 at:

• Calcutta
• Madras
• Bombay
• Agra, in 1866, for the North West Provinces - moved to Allahabad in 1869.
