On 1 May sepoys of the 7th Oude Infantry at Moosa Bagh refused to handle the greased cartridges. They were confronted by loyal troops on the following day and, in the face of loaded artillery, some fled - of whom some were captured - and some surrendered. Fifty mutineers were jailed and Lucknow remained quiet for the following three weeks.
