A zone of Indian Railways (IR), formed on 14 April 1952 from the merger of the Oudh and Tirhut Railway, the Assam Railway and the Kanpur-Achnera section of the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway.

On 15 January 1958, North Eastern Railway was split into two zones, with what had been the Assam Railway and the Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway becoming Northeast Frontier Railway, and the remainder left as North Eastern Railway.
