Purulia Ranchi Light Railway

The Purulia Ranchi Light Railway was a 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge(NG) branch of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway - later South Eastern Railway. It was opened by Sir Andrew Fraser, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal on 14th November 1907 [1].

The first section of the railway from Purulia to Ranchi, a line length of 73 miles(117 km). Previous to this Ranchi had been about 70 miles from a station. The line was extended to Lohardaga - 42 miles(67km) west of Ranchi in 1913. [2]

The track was converted to broad gauge in January 2004.
