The Santahar-Kaunia Loop Railway was a metre gauge(MG) line that was completed in 1905 becoming part of the Eastern Bengal Railway(EBR) network.

The original section from Santahar to Bonapara, a distance of 51 miles(82km), opened in 1899-1900 as theBrahmaputra-Sultanpur Railway, being worked by Eastern Bengal Railway(EBR).

On 1st April 1904, the Government of India(GoI) took over the enterprise and the line became the first part of the EBR's Santahar-Kaunia Loop Railway when the system was extended from Bonapara to Kaunia in 1905. [1]
