Summary
The Rajah of Tanjore had not been an reliable ally during the 1st Mysore War against Hyder Ali. The Nawab of the Carnatic (Arcot) was anxious to punish him and persuaded the Madras Presidency to join an attack on Tanjore. The British under Colonel Smith with their Indian allies stormed the fortress and took the Rajah captive. The Court of Directors of the East India Company disapproved of the campaign and ordered the Rajah to be restored in 1776.
