Monthly Army List
==''Monthly Army List''==
''Monthly Army List'' was an official War Office publication, which commenced August 1881 under this title and ceased after May 1940. (No issues published for Dec. 1897 and Jan. 1898).  Based on library catalogues, Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, and the National Library of Scotland may have the best collections. The British Library holds a broken range of editions from October 1881 (UIN: BLL01013821218), and another holding at the BL as part of IOR/L/MIL/1/79-1536, the latter to July 1940. The National Archives also holds Monthly Lists which are part of the Library collection<ref>David_Underdown. Retrieved 9 June 2018.</ref>, however the date range is unclear. The [[National Army Museum]] appears to hold a limited number of editions before and after the WW1 period.Some libraries may hold editions on microfiche. As an example, the National Library of Australia holds two editions of ''The Army List'' on microfiche published by M M Publications Lidgate, [England]
For at least some war periods a Confidential or "Security Edition" was also published with known editions August 1939 (available online) and September 1939, and it seems possible that ''Monthly List''s may have been continued after May 1940, to 1943, solely on a Confidential basis.<ref>From a comment in the British Library catalogue UIN: BLL01001094682 .</ref>
Quarterly indexes (Jan, Apr, Oct) appeared from April 1868 to October 1873, replaced by monthly indexes from February 1874, and a separate quarterly Retired List with its own index appeared from October 1881 to October 1897. Between May 1915 and April 1917 a separate monthly supplement of promotions, appointments and casualties was issued, becoming quarterly from July 1917 to April 1920. A separate half-yearly (Jun, Dec) supplement of the Reserve and Territorial Forces, rewards, undisposed balances etc. was issued between December 1923 and December 1938.<ref>Catalogue entry [https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/a58afb63-f05c-43d0-9802-8216773aa567 British Army: Monthly Army List OR/L/MIL/1/79-1536] discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk</ref>
Some libraries may hold editions on microfiche. As an exampleMonthly Army Lists contain a great deal of information, the National Library of Australia holds two editions including details of ''The Army List'location''' on microfiche published by M M Publications Lidgateof regiments and the Royal Artillery, both under individual regiments, but also in a section "Commands of the Army", where the information is listed geographically (example for [Englandhttps://archive.org/details/monthly-army-list-1927-sep/page/n63/mode/2up 1927 September] (Archive.org), commencing page 18), for both UK and overseas Commands, including for India, generally listed under East Indies, which may also include Burma and Aden. Ceylon is listed under Dominions, Colonies and Protectorates etc. This information is generally '''not''' available during war time and perhaps some other periods, including editions in early years, which also lack Contents pages.
