The first troop of cavalry in the Madras Presidency was raised in 1748 but regular establishment did not take place until 1784. Until 1788 seniority of regiments changed according to the age of the commanding officer so the regimental number changed. The numbers of the Native Cavalry Regiments in the list below are therefore generally those of 1788. Some regiments changed to Light Cavalry from 1816-19.

Numbering
