Summary
Following the defeat of Nana Sahib at the Second Lucknow Relief in November 1857 and the defeat of Tantia Tope at the second Battle of Cawpore in December, forces were raised to pursue the rebels north of the Gogra River. Colonel Francis Rowcroft took command of the Sarun Field Force and, together with the Naval Brigade from HMS Pearl under Captain Sotheby RN, won a series of victories between November 1857 and November 1858. Sir James Hope Grant also crossed the Gogra in November 1858 and defeated rebel forces at Bunkussia. Remnants of the rebel units took refuge in Nepal and Nana Sahib is thought to have died there.
