Known as The Royal Irish Regiment

1684 raised as the Earl of Granard's Regiment of Foot in Ireland from independent garrison companies; also known until 1751 by the names of other colonels
1695 became the Royal Regiment of Ireland
1751 became the 18th (or Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot
1782 became the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot
1881 became The Royal Irish Regiment
1922 disbanded on formation of Irish Free State
