Chronology

  • 1684 raised as the Earl of Granard's Regiment of Foot in Ireland from independent garrison companies; also known until 1751 by the names of other colonels
  • 1695 became the Royal Regiment of Ireland
  • 1751 became the 18th (or Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot
  • 1782 became the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot
  • 1881 became The Royal Irish Regiment
  • 1922 disbanded on formation of Irish Free State
