Chronology

  • 1798 raised as 2nd Battalion 15th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry in the 1796 reorganisation
  • 1824 became 31st Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Major C H Lloyd
  • 1856 became 31st Regiment of Bengal Light Infantry

In the Indian Mutiny the regiment did not rebel and fought in the Central India Campaign. Almost the entire Bengal Army had mutinied and, in the ensuing disbandment of its regiments, the 31st became the second most senior.

  • 1861 became 2nd Bengal Light Infantry
