  • 1777 raised in Tiruchirapalli as 20th Carnatic Battalion from 1st, 3rd, 8th and 16th Carnatic Battalions
  • 1784 became 20th Madras Battalion
  • 1796 became 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry
  • 1824 became 19th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry
  • 1885 became 19th Madras Infantry
  • 1903 became 79th Carnatic Infantry
  • 1922 became 3rd/3rd Madras Regiment
  • 1922 disbanded and re-raised as a Territorial Battalion
  • 1941, September converted to a Regular Battalion
  • 1947 allocated to India on Partition
