The Arkonam Branch Line, 39 miles(62km), was a branch from the South Indian Railway metre gauge (MG) 'Madras-Tuticorin Mainline' at Chingleput to a junction at Arkonam on the broad gauge (BG) Madras Railway 'Jalarpet-Mangalore Mainline'

The MG line from Chingleput via Walajabad and Conjeeveram opened in 1880-81. The section from Conjeeveram to Arkonam was first constructed by the Great Southern of India Railway in 1861 as broad gauge (BG), which was taken over by the South Indian Railway in 1874. The line was converted in 1878 to metre gauge(MG) to connect to the SIR MG network at Trichinopoly [1].
