Balmer, Lawrie & Co Ltd

'Balmer, Lawrie & Co Ltd' was a Managing Agent established in 1866 by George Balmer and Alexaner Lawrie. Their main office was at 103 Clive Street, Calcutta. Their UK based company was 'Alex Lawrie & Co', London. Their interests were in tea, coal, paper, flour and salt industries. They were also an importer of galvanised and structural metals, electrical contractors and machinery importers [1].

The company was originally 'Balmer, Lawrie' becoming 'Balmer, Lawrie & Co' in 1924 and 'Balmer, Lawrie & Co Ltd' in 1936; finally nationalised in 1972 <ref name =WB54>

The following Tea Gardens where tramways have been identified are listed on FIBIS page 'Assam Tea Industry' as having 'Balmer, Lawrie & Co Ltd' as Managing Agent:-
