The Bombay-Sind Connection Railway Survey
The following appears in the 1906 Indian Railway Board "History of Railway Projects"
'The project as proposed is for a line from Viramgam, on the Bombay, Baroda and Central India railway, via Malia, Bhuj and Lakhpat in Cutch, to Badin in Sind' [1].
- 1878 Survey - the line was first surveyed in 1878 [1].
- 1897-98 Re-survey - the more difficult portion between Bhuj and Mughal-Bhin, via Lakhpat, was re-surveyed in 1897-98 [1].
- 1905-06 - further survey by Robert Richard Gales, Engineer-in-Chief Surveys from State Railways [2].
There is no evidence that action was taken on this project as in 1920 the survey is reinstated:-
The following appears in "The Pioneer Times" of 8 October 1920, page 45:-
'The Bombay-Sind Connection Railway Survey has been authorised as a reconnaissance project being carried out by Mr A. Lines , an Engineer from State Railways to determine a suitable alignment for a broad gauge(BG) railway to provide a direct connection between Bombay and Sind. The proposal was to survey an area west of the Rajputana-Malwa Railway lying between Viramgam on the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway and also between Palanpur and Deesa on the Rajputana-Malwa Railway and Barmer on the Jodhpur-Bikaner Railway'[3].
It has not been possible to determine if this line was constructed - it is difficult to interpret the description
