Alfred John Oliver was born 1891 at Islington and enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment at Canterbury on 10th September, 1908 by putting on his age by one year. The 1st Btn Hampshire Regiment was stationed at Colchester and in August of that year moved to Harrow, Middlesex and then on 22ng August, 1914 sailed from Southampton on the Braemar Castle for France (WW1). Alfred was awarded the Military Medal for 'Bravery in the Field' and was severely wounded.
