At present (Spring 2019) we are working on further updates to this list by adding new information and references from many different sources. The aim is to make as much information as possible available on all aspects of the railways in India from the first beginnings in the 1840's through to partition in 1947.

We have extended the number of Railways identified and now include Tramways, Monorails, Industrial lines, Rail/River ferries, Railway Constructions and Railway Equipment Manufacturers. The current number of pages is over 1,400 and this will be further extended. The results of an 'on-line' search of the Indian Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library have been added to each appropriate Railway page and these have provided many new sources of information that are currently being reviewed. We are also uploading indetailed information on the hundreds of Industrial Railways in India up to 1947.

We have also created a Railway People section where that person made a significant contribution to the early development and operation of the railways in India, we have cross referenced these to the appropriate Railway page.

FIBIS Fact File #4: Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947, is a comprehensive listing of over 330 names and this will, in due course, be revised. It does contain invaluable advice on tracing 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the Indian Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library.
