Chiria Iron Ore Mines Railway
Chiria Iron Ore Mines, Chiria, Jharkhand [1] established by the 'Bengal Iron and Steel Company' in 1909 and opened in late 1910 [2].
A 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge(NG) railway was built to serve the Comany ore mines; it ran from an interchange point with the Bengal-Nagpur Railway(BNR) at Manoharpur, a distance of 17 miles(27km). The line had a ruling gradient of 1 in 40 and in 1915 had four locomotives and 120 wagons. The record shows that a number of locomotives were added prior to 1936 when the Company became bankrupt and was taken over [2].
The 'Indian Iron and Steel Company' took over assets and the 2ft 6in/762mm NG system was further expended with additional wagons and locomotives [3].
An aerial ropeway to the top of the mountain with a 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) system is stated to have opened in 1934, details of are not known [3].
