Decauville et Compagnie
This French light railway builder and supplier was founded in 1875 by Paul Decauville (1846–1922), a French pioneer in industrial railways. Decauville's major innovation was the use of ready-made sections of light, narrow gauge track fastened to steel sleepers; this track was portable and could be disassembled and transported very easily. The company produced track elements, locomotives and wagons. These were exported to many countries [1].
They first exhibited at the Calcutta International Exhibition in 1883-84. They had a permanent presence in India from the mid 1880's . The records show that in 1896 they were represented by 'Jambon & Cie', 7 Mission Row, Calcutta. In 1910 they had opened their own office at 8-10 Canning Street, Calcutta and their Agent in Madras and Bombay was 'Shaw, Wallace & Co'. In 1914 they are listed as also having a store yard at 147 Howrah Road [2].
