Gorumahisani Iron Mine Railway
The Gorumahisani Iron Mine is situated 60 km south of the Jamshedpur Steel Works. Production from the Iron Mine commenced in 1911 [1] and by 1946 13 million tons of ore had been extracted [2].
The Bengal-Nagpur Railway broad gauge(BG) ‘Kalimati-Gorumahisani Extension Railway’ from Kalimati (now called Tatanagar Juction, 5km south of Jamshedpur) where it connected to the Jamshedpur Steel Works Railway. The line was 40 miles(64km)in length and opened in 1911[3].
The records show that 2ft/610mm narrow gauge(NG) locomotives was operational at the mine. The mine closed on date unknown [1]
No further information has been found.
Background
The Jamshedpur Steel Works was established by 'Tata Iron and Steel Company' in 1907 at Sakchi, this was renamed Jamshedpur by 1918, in honour of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata dynasty.Preparations started in 1908, with the first machinery arriving in 1910 and first production in early 1912 [4].
Gorumahisani Iron Mine was the first iron mine developed by Tata; followed Badampahar Iron Mine which commenced production in 1922 [1].
