He raised the [[21st (Prince Albert Victor's Own) Cavalry (Frontier Force)|1st Punjab Cavalry]] in 1849 and fought on the North West Frontier under Sir [[Colin Campbell]]. He commanded the [[Corps of Guides, Punjab Irregular Force|Guides Cavalry]] and was present at the [[Delhi Campaign|Siege of Delhi]] and the [[Recapture of Lucknow]]. He comanded the brigade of three regiments of [[Hodson's Horse]] in the [[Oude Campaign]].
