James Abbott

General Sir James Abbott KCB (1807-1896) was an officer of the British East India Company who went to India in 1823 to join the Bengal Artillery. He served in the 1st Afghan War in the artillery and then undertook a journey to Khiva to negotiate for the release of Russian prisoners. He was a protege of Henry Lawrence and served in the Northwest Frontier. He was Deputy Commissioner of the Punjab after the 2nd Sikh War and commanded a column in the Black Mountain Expedition 1852-53. He founded the town of Abbottabad. He returned to England and died on the Isle of Wight.
