It had in 1901 a population of 67,735, lies in the plains on the Grand Trunk Road between [[Delhi]] and [[Lahore]], and has a mean temperature of 56° in January and 93° in June, and heavy rain, especially in the summer. The population of the Division was 45% Moslem, 40% Hindu and 14% Sikh, and described in the Gazetteer as “addicted to no form of serious crime, except female infanticide”; the common forms of crime were burglary and theft, which were dealt with by a Cantonment Magistrate and eight honorary magistrates.
