Khewra was a village in Jhelum District during the British period. It is the location of Mayo Salt Mines, the world's second largest.

History

According to local tradition, the mines were discovered by Alexander the Great's horse while the army waited to fight Raja Porus.[1] They have been mined ever since.

In 1872, a new method of mining was introduced by Dr. Warth, a mining engineer. This method, known as "Pillar and Chamber" has been used ever since.[2]
