Summary
The Indian Mutiny which started in Meerut spread from town to town and reached Jhansi on 5 June 1857 where the 12th Bengal Native Infantry and the 14th Irregular Cavalry rebelled. They killed two British officers, took possession of the Star Fort with its guns and treasure, plundered the town and released prisoners from the gaol. The remaining Europeans took refuge in the Town Fort and appealed to the Rani of Jhansi who sent them guns and ammunition. The fort was too weak to defend and Major Skene accepted terms of safe conduct. However, on emerging from the fort on 7 June, the Europeans were seized and taken to the Jokan Bagh where they were killed. The mutineers left for Agra and Delhi on 11 June.
