The Suramangalam-Salem Railway was sanctioned for construction by the South Indian Railway Company (SIR) on behalf of the District Board of Salem in March 1915. The short broad gauge(BG) line linking Suramangalam to Salem was 3.9 miles(6.3 Km) in length. [1]

The line opened 1917-18 and was worked by South Indian Railway(SIR) as part of its network. [2]

This short line converted into mixed gauge by addition of a MG rail in 1931, the MG line being part of the ‘Salem-Vriddhachalam Railway[3]
