The Thanesar-Kaithal Railway was a branch line of Delhi-Umballa-Kalka Railway(DKR) .
The ‘Kaithal Branch’, 30 miles(48km) actually ran from Kurukshetra and opened in Dec 1910 [1].

The DKR Company signed a contact in 1909 with the Government of India(GoI) for the construction and working of the Thanesar-Kaithal Railway line[2].

This branch was operating in 1912 making Kaithal an important trading centre. This line was worked by the East Indian Railway(EIR) and taken over by the GoI in 1925 [2][3]

Records

Refer to FIBIS Fact File #4: “Research sources for Indian Railways, 1845-1947” - available from the Fibis shop. This Fact File contains invaluable advice on 'Researching ancestors in the UK records of Indian Railways' with particular reference to the India Office Records (IOR) held at the British Library

An on-line search of the IOR records relating to this railway [4] gives the following: -

  • L/F/8/17/1234 “Delhi Umballa Kalka Railway Company, Contract for construction of a branch line from Thanesar to Kaithal; 1909"
