Tanjore was the headquarters of Tanjore District in Madras during the British period.

The Tanjore station is on the South Indian Railway metre gauge (MG) 'Madras-Tuticorin Mainline' and a junction with the 'Nagore Branch Line' to Negapatam and Nagore on the coast, 53 miles(84km) . There is also the 'Pulliarpati Quarry Branch Line', 4½ miles(7km) from Tanjore to the Pulliarpet Quarry.
