Also known as The Yorkshire Regiment

Chronology

  • 1702 raised as Earl of Huntingdon's Regiment of Foot
  • 1751 became the 33rd Regiment of Foot
  • 1782 became the 33rd (the 1st Yorkshire West Riding) Regiment of Foot
  • 1796 Arthur Wellesley later Duke of Wellington became Colonel of the regiment
  • 1853 became the 33rd (The Duke of Wellington's) Regiment of Foot
  • 1881 amalgamated with 76th Regiment of Foot and became the Halifax Regiment (The Duke of Wellington's Own) then Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
  • 1920 became the Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding)
  • 2006 amalgamated with other Yorkshire regiments becoming The Yorkshire Regiment

Jager Corps connection

The 33rd Regiment of Foot, in the Abyssinian Campaign of 1867-8, included some men originally from the Jager Corps[1] The 33rd Foot was in India when the expedition to Abyssinia was organised, and had been there since 1857, so it seems very likely these men had transferred in India from the 109th Regiment, possibly to take part in the campaign.
