Chronology

  • 1857 raised as 19th Regiment of Punjab Infantry
  • 1861 became 27th Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1864 became 27th (Punjab) Bengal Native Infantry
  • 1885 became 27th (Punjab) Bengal Infantry
  • 1901 became 27th Punjab Infantry
  • 1903 became 27th Punjabis
  • 1922 became 3rd/15th Punjab Regiment
  • 1947 allocated to Pakistan on Partition

Second World War

The regiment was in India until June 1940, then alternated between Aden and British Somaliland until May 1942, then Persia to January 1943, followed by Iraq and Syria to September 1943. The regiment arrived in Italy in September 1943 and remained until June 1945 when it returned to India.[1]
