Chronology

  • 1717 raised as Richard Philipps's Regiment of Foot
  • 1747 ranked as 40th Foot
  • 1751 became the 40th Regiment of Foot
  • 1782 became the 40th (the 2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot
  • 1881 united with 82nd Regiment of Foot to form The Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment)
  • 1938 became the South Lancashire Regiment
  • 1958 amalgamated with The East Lancashire Regiment to form The Lancashire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Volunteers)
  • 1970 amalgamated with the 1st Battalion, The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire), to form the 1st Battalion, The Queen's Lancashire Regiment
  • 2006 merged with the King's Regiment and the King's Own Royal Border Regiment to become 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (King's Lancashire and Border)
