Chronology
- 1804 raised as 1st Btn 28th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry following 1796 reorganisation when previous 28th was absorbed by 2nd Regiment
- 1824 1st Battalion became 55th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry under Major F Sackville
- 1857 mutinied at Mardan and Nowshera. Rebel sepoys joined the Hindustani Fanatics and were eventually defeated by a British expedition.
